Often times, being happy means making a big change such as moving to another city or changing jobs or ending an unhappy relationship. Changes like this can be terrifying and for many people, they’re much rather stay miserable than to take that risk. This is likely due to not wanting for things to get even worse. What if you make those changes and things don’t work out and you end up even more unhappy?

The risk is there but you need to weigh the pros of taking those risks. What’s the benefit? If the benefit is increased happiness, then take the chance because if you’re miserable, not changing guarantees you stay that way.

Happiness can be felt and experienced just with the things that are already in your life. If you keep searching outside for happiness, it may be a while before you can feel it. Ask someone who just landed a job after being unemployed for months how they feel about working.

You see, if you want to be happy, just notice the things you already have. If it helps, imagine your life without those things. Imagine living life without the use of your legs or eyes or not having a roof over your head or a steady income or your family or friends. You could create the feelings of being happy just by focusing on the right things.

Being happy often times takes courage and faith. When your life is falling to pieces, having faith that things will eventually work out for you can help you through those challenging times. Life is short. If you agree with that statement then it really makes no sense to spend more time than necessary not to be happy. Just like anger, happiness is a feeling, a decision, a choice. Think sad thoughts and you’ll feel sadder.

Almost everything we do in life is either for the purpose of being happy or avoiding pain.
